In the play "A Streetcar named Desire" Stanley is portrayed as a jerk of a husband “You can’t beat on a woman and then call her back! She won’t come, and her goin’ to have a baby! Says Eunice" (on pg. 42) He doesn’t treat Stella well, because he knew that she was pregnant and he didn't even think twice before striking at her. He was very much aware that hitting his wife Stella could of caused her to have a miscarriage and that still didn't stop him from hitting her. He’s a rough person. Furthermore, Stanley is a very impulsive person. For example, when he told Blanche to turn off the radio because he was playing poker and she didn't so, he ended up throwing the radio out the window. He reacts on his emotions and that's not always the smartest thing to do.
Although Blanche is portrayed as a strong woman she is actually insecure."And admire her dress, and tell her she’s looking wonderful” says Stella on pg.21 the following quote shows how Blanche is very self-conscious. She often needs flattery to feel better about herself. Her sister Stella knows about her insecurities and that's why she tells her husband to compliment her, because she knows how much that means to Blanche. Blanche doesn't really like the light to be shinning on her. She prefers the light to be dim because like that you wont be able to see her wrinkles and etc. The light shinning on her face wont show how old she really is. Since often her face isn't shown very well she tends to lie about her age.
